Ottawa Gee-Gees Down Algoma Thunderbirds

Coming off of two big wins this past Sunday, the Algoma Thunderbirds dropped two decisions to the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
 
With new confidence in their team after defeating the Nipissing Lakers on Sunday, the Algoma Thunderbirds women's team took to the court looking to continue their winning streak. Both teams exchanged buckets early in the first. Ottawa applied a full-court press forcing Algoma to turn over the ball allowing the Gee-Gees to pull ahead. Algoma struggled to penetrate Ottawa's zone defence but managed to hold Ottawa to only a 3-point lead, 14-11. The Gee-Gees went cold late in the first and Algoma controlled the pace allowing the Thunderbirds to pull ahead 18-14 going into the second. Ottawa recovered the lead after two key steals in the second, forcing Algoma to take a timeout. Algoma went cold and the Gee-Gees went on a 15-point run. Algoma was unable to get on the boards until the final seconds when Alyssa Dovigi scored a runaway lay-up, keeping the Gee-Gees to a 9-point lead, 29-20. Ottawa's momentum continued in the second half, out-rebounding and outscoring Algoma, to run away with a 77-36 win.
 
Ottawa improved to 9-5 in the OUA North while Algoma falls to 1-13 in the OUA West. Ottawa's Stephanie MacDonald led both teams with 19 points, followed by Krista V Slingerland with 18. Algoma's Sydney Resch earned 11.
 
In the men's action, the Algoma Thunderbirds took on the defending CIS silver medalists and current Number 1 team. A long three from Algoma gave the Thunderbirds an early advantage, 3-2. Both teams went step for step with Algoma clinging to a 1-point lead. Algoma out-rebounded the Gee-Gees, jumping ahead, 13-8. The Gee-Gees clawed their way back, but Algoma held onto their 1-point lead. Algoma pushed ahead, leading the Gee-Gees 21-18 going into the second. The Gee-Gees tightened their man-to-man defense but neither team managed to put up points for two minutes. Ottawa got into a rhythm, pulling ahead by 4. Algoma stayed with the Gee-Gees, down by only 3 with three minutes left. Two late shots from beyond the arc gave the Gee-Gees a 6-point cushion. Algoma opened strong after the half, chipping into the deficit by 2. The Gee-Gees pushed ahead, widening the gap to 12 after going 2-2 from the charity stripe. The teams exchanged threes in the third but Ottawa continued to widen the gap to 15. Algoma came back, getting within 10. Ottawa led 67-54 going into the fourth. The Gee-Gees momentum continued in the final stretch, winning their 14th consecutive game of the season, 91-63.
 
The Algoma Thunderbirds are now 1-13 and the Gee-Gees are 14-0. Algoma's Terrell Campbell was the points leader with 24.  John Berhanemeskel of the Gee-Gees had 19 followed by Caleb Agada with 18.
