Algoma University and the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program are pleased to announce that duo-sport student-athlete Riley Tubaro has joined the women's soccer and wrestling programs for the 2017-18 season.
"The Thunderbird's wrestling program is excited to add Riley to our lineup," said wrestling Head Coach
Trevor Manchester. "With her work ethic, athletic accomplishments, and academic success, Riley will fit in well with the current roster. She comes from a great high school and club program and should easily transition into the higher level of competition at the OUA level."
Standing at 5'1" and from Tecumseh, Ontario, Riley Tubaro competes in the 54-kilogram weight class in wrestling and is a midfielder on the soccer pitch. She is a member of both the Windsor Wrestling Club and Eastside Kickers Soccer Club. Tubaro has played L1 soccer for two years and has been competing in the WOYSL for four years. In wrestling, Tubaro placed third at the Ontario Juvenile Provincials.
Tubaro is currently in her senior year at Tecumseh Vista Academy. She is an Honour Roll student and will be graduating with both a French immersion and music diploma. She has been a member of her high school's student council for over two years and was elected the 2016-17 Minister of Spirit.
Tubaro is also an active volunteer with the Smiles 4 Miles charity soccer tournament.
She will be studying in Algoma U's four-year Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology program.
"I chose Algoma because I really love how it is such a small university and so new yet has so much history. I enjoyed the atmosphere that the school has and even the town. It reminds me of my hometown and my high school. When I was deciding on my university it came down to where was I going to feel most comfortable and feel as if I was home. I barley had to think about it, I just knew Algoma was where I was going to feel most welcomed and that it would be my home away from home."
