Basketball Games Support Mental Health and the Fight Against Breast Cancer

(SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont): This weekend, the Thunderbirds faced two different teams and raised awareness for two different initiatives. Starting on Friday the 13th, we hosted our Bell Let's Talk dedicated game. Bell Mobility began this campaign in 2010, with the funds supporting mental health initiatives across the country. The teams went up against the Brock Badgers.

The women started off fairly strong, with Brock only leading by two after the first quarter. The women were able to pick up their game once again in the third, however. The team lost to Brock with a score of 69-41. Top scorer of the game was Karly Fracalanza with 9 points.

The men's game kept us all engaged and at the edge of our seats. With the teams fighting for the top spot throughout the whole game, we saw some great energy and plays from our team. With the score ending in Brock's favour at 92-83, it was definitely a game that still kept us hopeful.

On Saturday the 14th, we hosted the kick off event for Shoot for the Cure. Every year, universities across Canada come together to host a Shoot for the Cure event in support of the fight against breast cancer through USports and the Canadian Cancer Society. We would like to extend our gratitude to those who participated in the hair cuts and pie in the face events at half time!

The women kicked things off with their game against Queen's. Although only falling behind by 4 at the end of the first half, Queen's took the win with a final score of 77-34. Top scorers of the game were Bethany Belaktsis and Gracie Batongbakal - each scoring the team 11 points.

The men had a tough game against Queen's as well. Ending off the first quarter with Queen's leading by 18 points, the men had a difficult time making up the difference. The final score of the game was 96 to 54 for Queen's. Top scorer of the game was Taleh Wade with 20 points.
