As Director of Varsity Athletics, it is my privilege to share the continued growth and momentum of Algoma University Athletics with our Thunderbirds family and the broader community that supports us.
Nestled along the beautiful shores of the St. Mary's River, where Lake Superior meets Lake Huron, Algoma University Varsity Athletics is proud to call Sault Ste. Marie home. Our roots in Northern Ontario shape who we are. We are resilient, hardworking, community-minded, and deeply connected to one another. Those values are reflected every day in our student-athletes, coaches, staff, alumni, and supporters.
The Thunderbirds continue to grow, not only in the number of opportunities available to student-athletes, but in the impact we have across campus and throughout our community. While we celebrate our achievements in competition, our mission extends far beyond wins and losses. We are committed to creating an environment where student-athletes can thrive academically, athletically, and personally while developing lifelong skills and meaningful connections.
At Algoma University, we proudly embrace the principles of True Sport alongside the Seven Grandfather Teachings as we remain committed to fostering a culture built on integrity, respect, inclusion, and safe practices. We believe that excellence is achieved through a holistic approach to student-athlete development. Through comprehensive support systems that include strength and conditioning, athletic therapy, nutrition, mental performance, leadership development, and academic support, we strive to empower our student-athletes to reach their full potential.
Our coaches, administrators, and support staff work together to create an environment that feels like family—one where every student-athlete is valued, challenged, and supported. We recognize that the student-athlete journey requires perseverance, dedication, and sacrifice. From early morning training sessions to late-night study hours, our Thunderbirds demonstrate an unwavering commitment to their goals and to one another.
What makes our program truly special is the sense of belonging that exists within it. Being a Thunderbird means representing something bigger than yourself. It means carrying the pride of Algoma University, the City of Sault Ste. Marie, and Northern Ontario wherever competition takes us. It means supporting teammates, giving back to the community, and building lasting relationships that extend well beyond graduation.
As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain grounded in the values that define us: hard work, resilience, community, and pride in where we come from. Together, we are building something special—an athletics program that reflects the strength and spirit of Northern Ontario while creating opportunities for future generations of Thunderbirds.
Thank you to our student-athletes, coaches, staff, alumni, partners, and fans for being an essential part of our journey. Your support helps make our continued growth and success possible.
Let's Fly Together.
Go Thunderbirds!
