Athletic Financial Awards and Bursaries

Algoma University and the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program pride themselves on offering the best student experience to our Student-Athletes. The Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program, in conjunction with the Scholarships and Awards Office, are pleased to offer athletic financial awards, scholarships,bursaries and other awards to incoming and returning Algoma University Student-Athletes.
 
No application is required. Recipients are selected by the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program in consultation with the Scholarships and Awards Office. Athletic scholarships are based on academic achievement and athletic excellence, and are administered in accordance with the USports and Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference regulations.
 
The maximum combined value of athletic awards that any one student-athlete can receive is $5000.00.
 
The value and number of awards given in any year are at the discretion of Algoma University.

Entering Athletic Scholarships:
A student will be considered an "Entering Student" for the entirety of the academic year when he/she registers for the first time at any member school in either the fall and/or winter semesters. Entering student-athletes are eligible to receive an Athletic Financial Award if they have been accepted and enrolled in degree-granting courses at Algoma University and are listed on the Eligibility Certificate and eligible to participate in at least one OUA conference competition on behalf of their school (or non conference competition if there is no formal conference schedule for that sport at that school).. Students must be registered in at least 18 credits per academic year (September – April) to qualify. Athletic scholarships are for a period of one academic year (September – April), with the possibility of renewal.
 
Non-Entering Athletic Scholarships:
The Non-Entering Athletic Scholarship is awarded to second-, third-, or fourth-year student-athletes who have attained a minimum 70 per cent or higher on all registered course work within the last academic year he/she was listed on the eligibility certificate for Algoma University. Students must be active participants, in good standing on an OUA team, and must be registered in a minimum of 18 credits per academic year (September – April).
 
The Team Jacobs "Follow Your Dreams" Bursary:
The Team Jacobs "Follow Your Dreams" Bursary is awarded to an entering Algoma University student-athlete, participating in varsity sports, as defined by the OUA. To be eligible, the student-athlete must be enrolled in full-time studies, with a course load of 30 credits, in any program, over two consecutive terms of study (fall/winter). He/she must have a minimum entrance average of 80 per cent, or equivalent G.P.A. on those courses used for admission and have a demonstrated financial need. This award is non-renewable. The bursary is valued at $500.00.
 
The Cross-Country Runner Student-Athlete Award:
The Cross-Country Student-Athlete Award is awarded to two student-athletes (one female, one male), participating in the varsity sport of cross-country running, as defined by the OUA. Eligible student-athletes will be in their second-, third-, or fourth-year of study and must meet OUA academic eligibility requirements and all other regulations. Final selection for each award will be based on the student-athlete with the highest average. This award is non-renewable. The award is valued at $500.00.
 
The Dr. Lou & Mae Lukenda Foundation Bursary
The Dr. Lou & Mae Lukenda Foundation Bursary is awarded to six student-athletes (3 female, 3 male) in any year of study and be listed on an OUA eligibility certificate as members of an Algoma University varsity sport. First preference given to student athletes participating in the basketball program and then to other students who comply with USPORTS-OUA academic eligibility requirements. Eligible students must comply with OUA and USports academic eligibility requirements. The award is valued at $1,500 each.

The Elvi & Lloyd Leitch Student Athlete Bursary
The Elvi & Lloyd Leitch Student Athlete Bursary is awarded to two student-athletes (1 female, 1 male) in any year of study and be listed on the USPORTS-OUA eligibility certificate as members of an Algoma University inter-university sport. Eligible students must comply with CIS and OUA academic eligibility requirements and must have a demonstrated financial need. The award is valued at $500 each.

Algoma U Black or Indigenous Heritage Student-Athlete (BIHS) Bursary
As the OUA recognizes the inequities identified in the criteria of the OUA AFA Policy, our goal is to alliviate some of the financial burden that Black and Indigenous student-athletes experience while participating in university sport. To qualify, a student-athlete must demonstrate financial need, self-identify as Black and/or Indigenous, have attained a minimum 65% on all registered course work. OUA member institutions are permitted to award Black or Indigenous Heritage Student-Athlete Bursaries up to a maximum amount of $2,000 per Student-Athlete.
