(WATERLOO, Ont.): The Algoma Thunderbirds women's soccer team traveled to Waterloo this past weekend for a tough doubleheader against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Despite facing one of the OUA's top offensive units, the Thunderbirds showcased defensive grit and the continued strong play of goalkeeper Paisley Pennington, who faced a heavy workload across both matches.
Game One (October 4):
In Saturday's matchup, Pennington was exceptional once again, turning aside 14 saves in a game that saw Laurier press aggressively from the start. Defenders Samantha Mazzuca and Madalyn Clement anchored the back line under sustained pressure, while midfielders Ayla Mazzuca and Sienna Nimubona worked to disrupt Laurier's buildup play. Although the Golden Hawks found the back of the net twice in each half to take a 4–0 victory, Algoma's composure and communication in the defensive third remained evident throughout the match.
Final Score: Algoma 0-4 Laurier
Game Two (October 5):
The Thunderbirds returned to Ansley Alumni Field on Sunday determined to tighten their defensive structure. Pennington stood tall once more, adding four saves to her weekend total and commanding the box against repeated corner-kick pressure. Sylvie Kostyshin generated Algoma's lone shot of the game, while Maddi Rouleau and Erin Santin helped contain Laurier's quick wide play. Laurier ultimately capitalized on their chances in each half to claim another 4–0 result, but Algoma continued to show fight and togetherness in the face of adversity
Final Score: Algoma 0-4 Laurier
Looking Ahead:
The team faces two opponents on the road, playing the Waterloo Warriors on October 10th at 1pm followed by the York Lions on October 11th at 1pm - these games mark the end of the regular season.
