SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — The Algoma Thunderbirds men's basketball team showed flashes of high-powered offence, strong backcourt play, and promising depth in a determined performance on Sunday afternoon at the George Leach Centre, falling 87–59 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Even in the loss, Algoma produced several standout individual efforts and continued to build momentum as the season progresses.
Guard Kal-El Alejo paced Algoma with 13 points, showing grit attacking the rim while going a perfect 3-for-3 at the free-throw line. Alejo also added 3 rebounds and an assist, serving as a steady offensive presence throughout the game. Logan Whitmell delivered a strong all-around performance, posting 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. His toughness and ability to create scoring opportunities helped keep Algoma engaged on both ends of the floor.
The team displayed balance contributions across their starting five: Forward Oliver Kristoffersen continued his consistent play, contributing 10 points and 5 rebounds while knocking down all three of his free throws, Jean-Luc Cubahiro added 7 points and worked effectively on the glass with 5 rebounds and Biong Deng connected twice from deep and chipped in 6 points, giving Algoma timely perimeter scoring.
Algoma's bench also made important contributions: Tyson Francisco impressed with 6 points on efficient shooting, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, Chance Beaudoin-Skerritt added 4 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal and Shalom Anyikwa hauled in 6 rebounds, tying for the team high. In total, the Thunderbird's bench produced 12 points, helping keep the offence balanced.
Algoma held strong early, staying within four points after the opening quarter and down only 8 points at the half mainly due to their press defensively. The Thunderbirds moved the ball well, finishing with 12 assists, and shot 83% from the free-throw line, one of their highest marks of the season. Effort on the boards also stood out, with Algoma pulling down 30 rebounds against a physical Lakehead front court.
Despite the final score, the Thunderbirds showcased steady development, improved ball movement, and multiple players stepping confidently into offensive roles.
The Thunderbird Men's basketball team continues their home stand next weekend when they face University of Toronto Blues on Friday night at 8 pm and the Toronto Metropolitan University Bold on Saturday night at 8 pm as well. Both games will be played in the George Leach Centre and will be live streamed on OUA tv
