Thunderbirds Welcome New Goalkeeper Coach, Megan Girardi

Algoma University's Thunderbirds Soccer program is proud to welcome Megan Girardi as the new Goalkeeper Coach for both the women's and men's soccer teams. A passionate coach and former high-level goalkeeper, Megan brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes on and off the field.

Originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Megan's soccer journey began with the Soo Civics before she went on to play four years at Western University. Her passion for the game also led her overseas, where she competed for two seasons in Scotland's Championship League.

"Soccer has been a big part of my life growing up," Megan shared. "Not having a true goalkeeper coach while I was developing made certain parts of the game tougher to learn, and that experience is what pushed me toward coaching - I wanted to offer young athletes the kind of support I didn't have."

Her coaching career began during her undergraduate years, working alongside her coach at Western. Since then, coaching has become not just a role but a calling. Megan emphasizes the importance of building strong relationships and creating a positive, supportive environment where athletes feel confident and motivated. She's committed to helping goalkeepers not only sharpen their technical skills but also grow as individuals.

"I understand the pressures of balancing school, sport, and life, and I will do my best to support athletes through that journey," she added.
Outside of soccer, Megan is a practicing physiotherapist - a profession that further enhances her coaching through a deep understanding of athletic performance, injury prevention, and overall wellness.

Her dual expertise in physiotherapy and high-performance sport makes her a valuable addition to the Thunderbirds coaching staff. The entire Athletics department is thrilled to have her on board and looks forward to the positive impact she'll have on our student-athletes.

"I'm excited to be part of the Thunderbirds and proud to join the Algoma community. I'm looking forward to helping this program grow and supporting the next generation of student-athletes," Megan said.

Please join us in welcoming Megan Girardi to the Thunderbirds family!
