Thunderbirds Show Fight in Weekend Home Opener vs. Brock

(SAULT STE. MARIE, On): The Algoma Thunderbirds women's soccer team opened their 2025 OUA campaign this past weekend at Superior Heights, hosting back-to-back matches against the Brock Badgers. Despite falling short on the scoresheet, the Thunderbirds showed resilience, flashes of offensive creativity, and a defensive unit that refused to quit against a strong Brock side.

Game One (August 30)
The Thunderbirds battled hard in their season opener, keeping pace with Brock in both possession and scoring chances. After conceding a penalty in the 13th minute, Algoma dug in defensively and generated momentum off the counterattack. Rookie keeper Paisley Pennington was sharp in her OUA debut, stopping five shots to keep the Thunderbirds within reach.

In the second half, Sylvie Kostyshin electrified the home crowd in the 87th minute, finding the back of the net to cut the deficit to one. Algoma pressed for an equalizer in the dying minutes, but time ran out as the match ended 2–1 in favor of the Badgers. The Thunderbirds held a 5–4 edge in corner kicks and matched Brock with six shots on goal, showcasing their ability to generate quality opportunities.

Final Score: Algoma 1 - 2 Brock

AUSU Player of the Game: Sylvie Kostyshin

Game Two (August 31)
On quick turnaround, the Thunderbirds returned to the pitch with energy but struggled to break down a disciplined Brock defense. Algoma's backline, led by Maddi Rouleau and Samantha Mazzuca, held strong early, but Brock capitalized just before halftime and carried the momentum through the second frame.

Pennington once again stood tall in net, recording a key first-half save to keep Algoma in striking distance. Midfielder Erin Santin provided the Thunderbirds' lone shot of the match, as the team worked to push play through the wings. Despite the 3–0 result, Algoma showed composure and growth, limiting Brock to just four shots on target and forcing them to work for every opportunity.

Final Score: Algoma 0 - 3 Brock

AUSU Player of the Game: Yvonne Barnes
