In Algoma University's men's basketball matchup on Friday, January 9 at the George Leach Centre, the Thunderbirds were led by several strong individual performances despite a 91–56 setback to Waterloo.
Logan Whitmell paced Algoma with a team-high 21 points, connecting on four three-pointers and shooting 8-for-18 from the field. He also added two rebounds and two steals, providing a consistent offensive spark throughout the night.
Kal-El Alejo followed with 12 points, attacking the basket and earning trips to the free-throw line, where he converted 6 of 7 attempts. Alejo also contributed two rebounds and an assist while playing 27 minutes.
Chance Beaudoin-Skerritt had six points, five rebounds, four assists, and a team-high four steals, bringing energy on both ends of the floor and creating opportunities in transition.
Oliver Kristoffersen added four points, knocking down a three-pointer and contributing three assists and two rebounds, while Jean-Luc Cubahiro provided effort inside with three rebounds and a steal in his minutes on the floor.
Off the bench, Shalom Anyikwa delivered seven points on efficient shooting, going 3-for-4 from the field and pulling down six rebounds. Tyson Francisco chipped in four points and two rebounds, and Christian Uduimoh added two points at the free-throw line along with a rebound.
Biong Deng contributed defensively with a rebound, an assist, and a steal, while Albin Rosenlund, Elijah Quissua, and Elliot Caron provided depth minutes.
The Algoma University Thunderbirds men's basketball team wrapped up their weekend homestand on Saturday night at the George Leach Centre, falling 86–55 to the Waterloo Warriors. Despite the final score, several Algoma student-athletes again turned in strong individual performances.
Kal-El Alejo led the Thunderbirds offensively, finishing with a team-high 17 points. Alejo connected on three three-pointers, went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line, and added six steals, applying constant pressure defensively while playing 29 minutes.
Logan Whitmell contributed nine points and added two rebounds while attacking the basket and drawing contact, converting seven of ten free-throw attempts. Oliver Kristoffersen added seven points, knocking down a three-pointer and contributing two assists and a block in his 21 minutes on the floor.
Jean-Luc Cubahiro made his impact felt inside, pulling down a team-high eight rebounds while adding five points, two blocks, and a steal. His activity around the rim helped anchor Algoma's interior presence.
Elijah Quissua provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, connecting on two three-pointers and grabbing five rebounds in 24 minutes. Elliot Caron was efficient in limited action, scoring five points on a perfect 2-for-2 shooting effort, including a three-pointer.
Chance Beaudoin-Skerritt contributed defensively with three rebounds and a steal, while Biong Deng added four rebounds, three assists, and defensive pressure throughout his 25 minutes. Shalom Anyikwa chipped in three rebounds, and Christian Uduimoh added two boards and a steal in reserve minutes.
The Thunderbirds will look to build on these individual performances as they continue conference play next weekend on the road when they face the Nipissing Lakers on Friday, January 16th at 8:00 pm and the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, January 17th also at 8:00 pm.
