Thunderbirds Battle Through Final Road Weekend of 2025–26 Season

The Algoma University women's basketball team closed out the 2025–26 OUA regular season with a challenging final road weekend, facing nationally competitive programs at Western University and the University of Windsor.

Friday, Feb. 13 – Algoma 52, Western 105 (London, Ont.)

Algoma opened the weekend at Alumni Hall against a deep Western squad. Despite an early deficit, the Thunderbirds showed composure and found rhythm as the game progressed, particularly from beyond the arc.

Brooke Gruhn led Algoma with 14 points, knocking down three three-pointers and adding four assists while playing 38 minutes. Taylor Randall provided a major boost off the bench, scoring 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three, while Mercedes Mazzuca chipped in 10 points and three assists. Annabelle Lefebvre contributed eight points and three rebounds, and Ryan Zimmer was active defensively with four rebounds and three steals.

Algoma closed the game with its most efficient quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field in the fourth, a positive takeaway against one of the conference's top teams.

Saturday, Feb. 14 – Algoma 46, Windsor 72 (Windsor, Ont.)

Less than 24 hours later, the Thunderbirds took the floor at the Toldo Lancer Centre and delivered a gritty defensive effort, particularly on the glass. Algoma battled Windsor possession by possession and stayed engaged throughout the contest.

Sadie Grawbarger anchored the Thunderbirds with a strong all-around performance, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds while logging 39 minutes. Ryan Zimmer added 10 points, connecting from long range and the free-throw line, while Elia Galdos and Annabelle Lefebvre each scored six points. Bernadette Maranan was perfect from the field, contributing five points in limited minutes, and Gruhn added five points and three assists. Algoma limited second-chance opportunities and continued to share the ball, with multiple players contributing across the lineup as the team closed out the season on the road.

Although the final weekend capped a difficult season, the Thunderbirds showed perseverance, growth, and commitment to one another through the final buzzer of 2025–26. With meaningful minutes across the roster and continued development from both starters and bench players, Algoma closed the campaign with resilience and valuable experience moving forward.
