Thunderbirds Welcome New Women’s Soccer Head Coach

Thunderbirds Welcome New Women’s Soccer Head Coach

Ahead of the upcoming 2026 OUA soccer season, the Algoma University Thunderbirds are proud to officially announce the hiring of Ali Kordi as the new Head Coach of the Women's Soccer program.

Ali brings with him a strong coaching background having most recently been with the Langley United Soccer Association as the Head Coach of the U16 Boys program and Assistant Coach of their League 1 BC Premier League Men's team.

"We are thrilled to welcome Ali into this new role within Algoma University Athletics," said Rachel Rankin, Director, Student Life & Ancillary Services.

During the hiring process, Ali demonstrated a clear vision for how he plans to shape the women's program. "All of my coaches have had a major impact on me," he shared. "They've helped me grow not only as an athlete, but as a person just in general. I want to pass that experience on to the next generation, building a team culture here at Algoma University that feels like a family, first and foremost."

Ali's coaching philosophy is centered around culture, clarity, and individual development. "It's important to establish clear standards and expectations so the team is aligned," he explained. "At the same time, every athlete is unique. My role is to identify their strengths and areas of growth and help them develop in a way that suits them best. My philosophy is centered upon creating an environment in which players can maximize their individual potential through clear tactical frameworks, purposeful training design, evidence-based feedback and performance analysis."

Student-athletes can expect a coach who is passionate, supportive, and committed to excellence. "I keep a fun and focused atmosphere. I'll always be honest, fair, and understanding - but I also set the bar high because I believe in our athletes," he said.

To the broader campus and community, Ali had this message: "I'm excited to start this new chapter with the Algoma Thunderbirds family. I look forward to seeing all of the community support as we continue to build something special here in Sault Ste. Marie together."

Welcome, Coach Kordi! We're excited to see where you'll lead us!
