Summer Camps

2026 Registration Now Open!

Algoma University offers week-long summer camps throughout July and August for children ages 6 to 14 years old for Multi-Sport and Camp Explore and ages 6 to 16 years old for Thunderbird Basketball. Guided by the HIGH FIVE philosophy, our Thunderbirds Summer Camps aim to promote a healthy active lifestyle, the exchange of ideas, diversified learning, and memorable experiences for every child. Thunderbird Day Camp is the place to be this summer!

Register for two camps, and get the third 25% off! This can apply to one or more children from the same family and all three camps must be registered at the same time, with the same parent/emergency contact information. Algoma University Staff and faculty are eligible for a 25% discount! This discount is not available online and Thunderbird Basketball is excluded from this promo. Week 1 & 5                   

Fuel imagination and adventure! Each day features a new theme—art, science, history, fantasy, or nature—with hands-on projects, experiments, and outdoor games. Campers create, problem-solve, and stay active through crafts, drama, STEM challenges, and team activities. Perfect for curious minds—join the fun and let creativity soar while staying active!

What to expect: 

  • Themed daily adventures (think: Mad Scientist Monday, Time Traveler Tuesday, Fantasy Friday!).
  • Mix of creativity + action: Art, STEM projects, drama, outdoor games, and lively group challenges.
  • Skill-building focus: Problem-solving, creative expression, and teamwork.

 


Week 2 & 6 

Discover, play, and grow! Campers explore obscure sports, dances, local ecosystems, hands-on art, and cultural games—through curiosity-driven adventures. Each day blends active challenges with creative learning to spark new passions. Perfect for curious kids eager to try everything—no experience needed. 

What to expect:

  • Unconventional activities: Think outing to Steel City MMA, pickleball, geocaching, or backyard ecology.
  • Growth mindset focus: Embrace challenges, teamwork, and healthy habits.
  • Active + engaged: Movement, creativity, and exploration fuel every session.

 


Week 3 & 7

Adventure awaits! Campers master outdoor skills—camping, hiking, nature ID, fire-building, orienteering—rain or shine. Through hands-on exploration, they’ll grow resilience, problem-solving, and a deep connection to the natural world. Perfect for budding adventurers ready to unplug and thrive outdoors.

What to expect:

  • Skills + grit: Navigate trails, identify flora/fauna, programming with Entomica Insectarium, and weather challenges.
  • Active all day: Hikes, survival games, outdoor sports, team challenges.
  • Growth mindset: Embrace obstacles, learn from nature, stay curious.  

 


Week 4 & 8

Crush goals, break barriers! A camp focused on learning new skills and challenging oneself, campers will complete challenges in almost everything from physical activity, creative tasks, world records, and more. It is all about setting goals and working towards them! 

What to Expect:

  • Skill surges: Master sports basics, DIY engineering, talent shows, or Olympic events!
  • Growth mindset grind: Build grit, adaptability, and confidence through wins and trials.
  • Active innovation: Teamwork meets creative problem-solving in high-energy challenges.

 

Kickstart an unforgettable summer with our Multisport Camp, where kids dive into a high-energy blend of sports, skill-building, and friendship! Designed for all skill levels, this camp empowers campers to explore sports like baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer, floor hockey, badminton, and more—all while fostering agility, confidence, and a love for teamwork.

Under the guidance of passionate, experienced coaches, campers thrive in a positive, inclusive environment that celebrates effort and growth as much as it does fun. Every day brings new challenges and adventures, ensuring kids stay active, make friends, and learn the value of fair play.

THUNDERBIRD BASKETBALL BASICS CAMP - FULL DAY & HALF DAY
July 13th – 17th 2026


This camp is an opportunity for the young basketball enthusiast to develop fundamental skills in
a fun and positive environment. Each day will include learning skills such as ball handling,
passing, shooting, and dribbling, along with some friendly competition. Players will be grouped
by age and will receive one-on-one instruction from both our Varsity head coaches as well as
women's & men's varsity basketball players. T-Shirt & prizes provided.
*Please bring indoor shoes, lunch and a water bottle

Dates: July 13th -17th 2026 (Boys & Girls)

THUNDERBIRD BASKETBALL ELITE CAMP -  HALF DAY

July 20th - 24th 2026

 

This camp is designed to help take your basketball skills to the next level. Varsity Coach Katie
Hamilton and Coach Ryan Vetrie along with varsity women’s and men’s players will work with
athletes to refine skills and develop players ability in preparation for the upcoming basketball
season. There will be a focus on skill development and advance decision making using a variety
of small sided games as well as competition throughout the week. T-Shirt provided.

ALL BOYS SUMMER SKILLS BASKETBALL CAMP - HALF DAY
August 10th -14th 2026


The 'All Boys Summer Skills' basketball camp morning sessions are designed for elementary & beginner
boys basketball players who want to work on their fundamental skills and decision making. Most of the
focus will be on developing strong fundamental skills in shooting, passing, dribbling and footwork; while
the afternoons are designed for high school boys basketball players who want to tune up on their
basketball skills and decision making before the school year starts. There will be a variety of drills to help
the participants better themselves in shooting, dribbling, passing, finishing, footwork and
defensive/offensive strategy. 


It's our goal at the All-Boys Summer Skills Basketball Camp to enhance and improve players' skill levels
through fundamentals, decision making and small-sided games. There will be quality instruction and
coaching, while establishing a positive and enriching environment based on teamwork, sportsmanship
and having fun. This is a great opportunity for participants to learn from our Algoma varsity men's
basketball players & coaches. T-Shirt provided.

  • Do people have to pay for the camps in full at the time of registration? Yes, the camp must be paid for in full at the time of registration. You can reassure them that our camps are not full at this time and we do have some flexibility with opening spots in different age groups if they must register late. If anyone has serious concerns about this please have them reach out to joel.

 

  • Are there any discounts available? Yes! *Algoma University staff are eligible for a 25% discount! Also, members who register for two camps, and get the third 25% off!   • My child has not played many sports before, is AU camp the right fit? Certainly! At Algoma University Summer Camp, we welcome children of all skill levels, including those who haven't played many sports before. Our camp is built on inclusivity, with campers grouped by age and skill level to ensure personalized attention. Coaches are flexible in their approach, adapting activities to meet the needs of each group. They're also trained to adjust their teaching styles accordingly. Additionally, we offer Camp Explore, a program focused on campers pursuing experiential learning opportunities, building community, and engaging in critical and creative thinking while also incorporating physical activity every day, 

 

  • What is the cancellation policy? If a cancellation is made more than 1 month before the camp start date, a refund will be issued with no cancellation fee. For cancellations made more than 2 weeks before the start date, a $25 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund. Similarly, cancellations made more than 1 week in advance will incur a $50 cancellation fee, while those made less than 1 week before the start date will be subject to a $100 cancellation fee. However, if a cancellation is requested within 48 hours of the camp, no refund will be issued. 

 

  • I have a discount/free camp/etc from a previous year, how do I use it? Just reach out to  thunderbirdscamp@algomau.ca and we will provide information on this.

 

  • Is there early drop off or late pick up available? Yes, both are available. This will be communicated to all registrants before the camp's start date. Early drop-off between 8:30 AM - 9 AM and pick-up between 4:00 PM - 4:30 PM are included in the registration cost, not an additional charge.
