(SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont): The Thunderbirds are back on the court feeling refreshed and ready to finish the second half of the season strong! On Friday, January 6th, the team faced the Nipissing Lakers here at the GLC. The women's team had the addition of Karly Fracalanza, a former player of AU, join them on the court. With another year of eligibility, the team welcomes Karly back for the rest of the season. The women scored over Nipissing in the second and fourth quarter, however, couldn't make up the difference against the Lakers. With Fracalanza and Belaktsis both earning the team 18 points, the final score of the game was 56-45 for Nipissing.
The men's team also had a small change, with Interim Head Coach Ryan Vetrie supporting them in their first OUA game together. Throughout the first half of the game, the two teams were consistently a couple points shy of one another. With Algoma scoring over Nipissing in the second quarter, the Lakers only led by 2 at half time. The Thunderbirds fell just shy in the second half, ending the game with a score of 86-75 for Nipissing. Top scorer of the game was Devin Miron with 19 points.
In Saturday action, although the women won the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the game. Laurentian won 60-44, and once again, Belaktsis and Fracalanza were the top scorers of the game - each with 12 points.
The men's team had a great game on Saturday. The Thunderbirds managed to take the lead in every quarter, with the most points scored in the third. We saw some stellar team dynamics, and with some individual moments of greatness, the Thunderbirds won 89-65 over Laurentian. Top scorer of the game was Johan Germain with 19 points.
