Box Score 4 (SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont.) Home opener weekend brought some ups and downs for the Thunderbirds. Algoma played Windsor in back to back games on Sept. 2nd and 3rd, and although the women's team had a couple of tough losses, we saw some of the best outcomes from the men compared to the last couple of seasons.
Frank Onasanya (Interim Head Coach) led the women to start of their season along with the support of assistant coaches Mara Roy, Shane Seraphin, and Mike Magli. The team had a tough start to their season, loosing to Windsor 9-0.
Makayla Townes made seven saves during the game.
David Andreychuk, who was newly named Algoma's Head Coach of men's soccer over the summer, felt good about his team going into the game. Although a couple of injuries, he was confident that his starters would be able to hold their own. Andreychuk, along with Connor Cowan-Thompson and Steve Mazzuca, guided the men's team in one the best games we have seen in the last couple years.
Julius De Paz celebrated scoring the first goal of the OUA season, and the team held the score at 1-0 for the majority of the game. However, a penalty kick from Windsor left us ending the game at a draw with a final score of 1-1. Joshua Bonduc made four saves throughout the game.
On Sunday, the women's team lost once again with a score of 5-0.
Megan Chandler had a total of nine saves throughout the game. The men's team ended with another draw, which certainly kept us at the edge of our seats. The game ended 0-0, with Joshua Bonduc making five total saves.
Next action for the Thunderbirds will be September 9th and 10th as they travel to face the Laurier Golden Hawks! Best of luck Thunderbirds!
