Weekend Games vs. Wilfred Laurier & Windsor

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - This past weekend, the Thunderbirds kicked things off with their Homecoming games. On Friday, the teams faced off against Wilfred Laurier. Our women's team celebrated a goal from Leigha Nippard. Makayla Townes had a total of some great saves. The women were able to hold off Laurier for the majority of the game, with Laurier scoring most of their goals in the second half. Final score of the game was 5-1 for Laurier.

Afterwards, the men took the field. With a couple of new faces on the field, it was interesting to see the slight change in team dynamic. Alexander Burt had some incredible saves. Although the team had a couple shots on net, the final score ended with a 2-0 lead for Laurier. Despite the loss, this was one of the best games the men have had this season!

We were also fortunate to have 705 Athletics help us set the tone for our Homecoming event! Special thank you to the cheer team - we can't wait to see them at other AU games in the future!

On Sunday, the teams faced Windsor. These games also had a special initiative, as the teams purposefully warmed up in Every Child Matters orange shirts. Our athletes wanted to raise awareness on Sunday for those children that were lost due to the mistreatment and trauma through the residential school system. They wanted to raise awareness for the survivors, and the battles they face due to intergenerational trauma. As Algoma University students, they acknowledge the significance and history of the grounds of our campus. By wearing the orange shirts, they hope they hoped they would encourage everyone to wear orange on September 30th, which is marked as the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

The women came ready to play, and the game ended with a score of 1-0 for Windsor from a penalty kick. Despite the loss, we are thrilled to see the improvements the team has been making as they continue their season!

Windsor won the men's game with a 9-0 lead. It was a tough loss, and we hope the team will be able to come together for their future games.

For our next game day action, the teams will be travelling to play the York Lions!
