Thunderbirds Set to Compete at USports National Wrestling Championships

After an impressive showing at the OUA Wrestling Championships on home soil at the George Leach Centre, six Algoma Thunderbirds have earned their place at the USports National Wrestling Championships. Representing Algoma on the national stage will be Clayton Johnson (57KG), Anthony Nighbor (76KG), Rebecca Vann (50KG), Becca Gutteridge (59KG), Nevaeh Pine (76KG), Lilah Fraser (83KG), Kira Buck (72 kg) and William Mitchell (65 kg).

The Thunderbirds capitalized on their opportunity to compete at home, showcasing resilience and determination at the OUA Championships. On the women's side, Rebecca Vann secured a fifth-place finish with a dominant fall victory (1:41) over Lakehead's Heidi Halcrow. Becca Gutteridge also claimed fifth place, pinning Queen's Ava Campbell in just 1:08. Nevaeh Pine advanced through her bracket with a bye in the fifth-place match, while Lilah Fraser delivered an inspiring performance, winning her third-place match by fall (4:59) over Western's Risa Ferrari.
On the men's side, first-year standout Clayton Johnson impressed in his OUA debut, securing a fifth-place finish with a 12-2 technical fall victory over Guelph's Josh Bissett. Meanwhile, Anthony Nighbor battled through the tournament to earn a fourth-place finish before being forced to withdraw due to injury.

"The Algoma wrestlers have been training hard over the last few weeks since the OUA Championship.  We have high hopes for the young team, especially after some strong performances this year.  Both teams have been consistently ranked in the top 10 in U Sports.  The coaches are extremely impressed with the overall progress and are looking forward to watching our student-athletes continue to make a mark," says head coach, Trevor Manchester.

With the USports National Championships on the horizon, the Thunderbirds are eager to test themselves against the country's top collegiate wrestlers. The experience gained at the OUA Championships has set a strong foundation, and the team is ready to make their mark at the national level.

The team makes their way to St. Catharines, Ontario to begin the competition on February 28th at Brock University.

Stay tuned for updates as the Thunderbirds take to the mats in pursuit of national success!
